We left the marina a little later than we wanted to on Friday afternoon. We then stopped and picked up a bunch of live bait at Desco, just in case we wanted to hit the bottom on Saturday.
We pushed further offshore to the stream and started working our way South to where we start our swordfish drift. Seas were laying down quite nicely to 2' and we put a couple dolphin and wahoo in the box.
Tonight was Brad's turn - after countless trips for swords, he was yet to catch one and we all felt very badly about that.
We started our drift in 1350 ft, but the wind was blowing out of the East and pushed us shallower with no bites to show for it after an hour, so we moved out to 1500 ft. By that time, the wind shifted out of the South and kept us at 1500 ft.
Our first bite was a solid one - fish hit the 100' bait and smoked it! Brad fought that fish and finally Brad had a shot - a small fish but a sword nonetheless! Release!
We then moved back down to where we got that hit and shortly after got another one on. Fought him for like 20 minutes and as soon as we touched the leader - GONE! Bastich!
Well, at around 1:30 AM, someone got funny and turned on the big fan! Wind picked up and shifted to the SW/W at 20 knots. It was not very funny. Seas were 6'+ and we were rolling around in it. Nice.
Well, we had two more sword bites but never got the hook set in either.
In the AM, we trolled for some more dolphin and wahoo and by 1 PM, we decided that we had enough of those species to feed a villiage for 2 weeks, so we hit the bottom.
We managed a BUNCH of nice scamp grouper - doesn't get much better!
So overall, we had 1 sword release, 11 dolphin, 2 wahoo, 5 scamps - our fish box was full!
